Wastewater Treatment Plants

Industrial wastewater generated by enterprises of various types requires a differentiated approach to treatment because:
— it has a heterogeneous qualitative and quantitative composition;
— it contains varying amounts of organic and inorganic substances with different rates of oxidation;
— the substances in the wastewater are present in a dissolved, colloidal, or suspended state.

To determine the suitability of wastewater for biological treatment under artificial conditions, the following factors are taken into account: the ratio of organic to inorganic components, the concentration of pollutants as measured by chemical oxygen demand (COD), the presence of the necessary amount of biogenic elements for the normal life activities of activated sludge microorganisms, the pH of the medium, and other factors.

The most common and cost-effective methods of wastewater treatment are biological methods based on aerobic and anaerobic technologies.

Purification Technology

Aerobic

Aerobic treatment is a biological method for treating effluent from the food and processing industries and municipal services to remove the main pollutants – organic compounds – with a concentration of pollutants of up to 2,000 mg O₂/dm³ as measured by chemical oxygen demand (COD).
The main treatment facilities used in aerobic treatment technology are aerotanks.

Anaerobic

Anaerobic treatment is a process whereby organic matter is broken down by anaerobic bacteria in the absence of oxygen; it requires no aeration or energy input, and serves as a source of co-generated energy in the form of biogas.

Combined

Anaerobic-aerobic treatment technology comprehensively combines the capabilities and advantages of both wastewater treatment technologies whilst optimising economic outcomes.

Design and Construction of the VOC Treatment System for the GekGel/VINAGRO Distillery

Very high COD and BOD levels. The problem was solved using a compact combined aerobic-anaerobic treatment system, which removed 98% of the pollutants. COD levels: inlet 10,000 ppm, outlet 30 ppm. Configuration: Flotation unit – MBBR – IC – Settling tank.
