The Józefów-Mykolaiv biogas plant

Raw materials

The plant processes 200 metric tons of raw materials per day: 115 metric tons of silage and 85 metric tons of beet pulp—the main byproduct of the sugar factory.

Methanation test trials were conducted by Opure (Netherlands) in a very short time and allowed for a practical approach to the project’s technical and economic challenges. Adverio (Netherlands) carried out the engineering work. “We built in a certain degree of flexibility regarding raw materials and the ability to increase capacity through processing…,” says Dmytro Krasutskyi, head of Adverio’s Ukrainian office. The technical solution to combine a 25-meter-tall industrial reactor (ideal for industrial biogas production in countries with cold climates) with a classic agricultural biogas reactor featuring a soft membrane dome reduced the project’s payback period to 3 years.

Performance

“Our goal was to develop energy-efficient technology and select technical solutions that offer the highest productivity and low production costs, since the project’s payback period should be no more than 3 years. Moreover, this is only the first phase of the project, and of course, the second phase will allow us to use resources even more efficiently,” said Yevgen Lukashivich

0.65m³/kg of dry organic matter

Construction began in June 2018 and lasted 18 months. Inthe selection of the site — near the sugar factory was based on the efficient use of investment funds. As of October 1, 2019, all commissioning workhas. The biogas complex operates around the clock. All processes areand requires no more than 5 employees per shift. The owners plan to launch the second phase of the project, with a capacity of 5 MW, at a later date.

More than 70% of the complex’s equipment was manufactured in Ukraine at the production facility UTC — KEMP (Koziatyn Experimental Machine-Building Division)—which allows the facility to sell the electricity it generates at a rate 10% higher than the green tariff and shorten thepayback period of the project.
